The function of the excretory system is primarily to eliminate waste products from the body. This system plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis by removing toxins and excess substances that can accumulate and potentially disrupt physiological balance. Wastes include metabolic byproducts, like urea from protein metabolism, as well as excess salts and water. By filtering blood through structures such as the kidneys and expelling waste through urine, the excretory system helps to regulate fluid balance, electrolytes, and overall internal stability.

Other processes, such as regulating blood sugar levels, enhancing oxygen uptake, and assisting in hormone secretion, are primarily carried out by different systems in the body (the endocrine system plays a key role in hormonal regulation, for example), which differentiates their functions from the excretory system.
